Databases Supported by PHP
PHP is a very popular programming language that was designed
from the ground up to be used for the web. It is open source so
anybody can download it and use it for free and if they have the
know-how improve it.
The strength of PHP comes from its ability to
be used in many different environments from windows, Mac OS and
linux. It also has support for lots of different databases and in
this article we cover the different databases and what they
are.
dBase - dBase was the first widely used database
management system for microcomputers. It was
originally available on CP/M, Apple II, Apple Macintosh, Unix, IBM
PC.
Informix - Informix is a relational database management system
from IBM. It is in fact a family of products that offers different
editions according to your needs. You can have a developer edition,
enterprise edition, express edition etc.
Ingres - Ingres is a relational database management system
that is open source but commercially supported. It is designed for
government applications and in large commercial environments.
Microsoft SQL Server - As you've probably
guessed from the name this database is offered by Microsoft. It is
an enterprise level sql server and it is very popular.
mSQL - Although not open source itself mSQL or Mini SQL was
very popular in its early days for open source applications as it
is lightweight. Its popularity declined and MySQL has taken its
place.
MySQL - MySQL is a very popular RDBMS that is open source and
used on millions of websites. It is easy to use and very
fast.
Oracle - Oracle is a powerful RDBMS that is offered by the
Oracle Corporation which was started by Larry
Ellison and a couple of his friends.
